Dr. Kenneth A. Wiener

Dr. Ken Wiener is one of those rare people who chose his profession -- Optometry – when he was a youth. Raised in Portland, Oregon he wrote about Optometry while attending the lauded Grant High School, made famous by the movie Mr. Holland’s Opus. He later attended Pacific University in Forest Grove Oregon, a university known for its pioneering work in the College of Optometry on the relationship between the eyes to the brain and learning. He received his Dr. of Optometry degree from Pacific in 1962 and quickly departed for service in the U.S. Navy where he was the Optometrist at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego. During his tour of duty, he met and married his wife of 44 years, Nancy. Upon completion of his military duty in 1965 he moved to San Jose and then soon opened his office on Cahalan Avenue when the Sunrise Medical Dental Center first came into being. Dr. Wiener has always had a commitment to helping children find their niche in the educational system and in providing eye care to children, youth and adults without the necessary financial resources. In the late 1960’s he helped to launch “The Lyceum,” a forward thinking extra curricular program for gifted children. Dr. Wiener has been a member of the Willow Glen Kiwanis, where he served as president, the Almaden Valley Jaycees, the Santa Clara County Optometric Society and San Jose Rotary, where he served on the Board of Directors, chaired the Enterprise Leadership Conference, and is currently the Liaison between the Rotary Club and the Santa Theresa High School Interact Club. Dr. Wiener maintains an abiding interest in meeting the unique eye care needs of his patients and specializes in Lasik Co-management, serving as a consultant and co-trainer at the Furlong Lasik Clinic. As the generations of families return to the office, there are many memories shared of long term family care and, in particular, the fun filled educational afternoons with the latest in eye health and eye wear fashion, music and food at the “Frame Fair,” a unique optometric event founded by Dr. Wiener in 1982.

Dr. Wiener’s professional priority is the highest quality specialized treatment and care for the individual and the 40+ year independent private optometric family practice has been the perfect vehicle to achieve this ultimate goal. With the addition of Dr. Steven Kas to the office in 2007, this level of personal service is even more possible.

Before bringing her knowledge and expertise to this practice, she was an optician for her father, Dr. Ray Sommer. Along with Corby, Sheri has served as a mainstay for the practice and a face you can count on seeing year after year. She almost knows the families that frequent the practice as her own. It is a pleasure for Sheri to meet your optical need and discuss any questions regarding treatment option from conventional eyewear to Lasik procedures, of which she has been a successful patient herself.

Dawn

Dawn grew up in the Santa Cruz mountains and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at UC Santa Cruz. After working as a chemist for a couple of years she found that working in a laboratory setting was not for her and began working in the health care industry. As an optician, Dawn can blend her love of fashion, optics and technology with customer service. She loves the challenge of matching the appropriate frame style and lens options to meet the needs of any patient and answering any questions that you may have. Not sure whether you need an anti-reflective coat or polarized lenses? Dawn is more than happy to go over the benefits and explain the differences in lens options and how they effect you.
